There were scenes in that movie where I felt I was watching the Nazis (especially the scene where Krennic orders the execution of the scientists on Eadu). What was interesting about Rogue One's portrayal of the Empire was that it put more focus on how the Empire is a totalitarian state, as well as a bureaucracy. They were presented as mostly a unified entity. The OT portrayed the Empire as a sort of 'fantasy evil,' with an emphasis on the sheer power and fear that they embodied - e.g. I felt something similar, and I think Rogue One as a whole portrayed the Empire in a different way than the Original Trilogy did, in a way that worked very well, and a way the difference in music shows.
